ISSUE

A world-leading chemical company’s new global CEO were going to meet with high-level Chinese officials and SOE leaders. The company’s China team asked DaoHe to help the CEO gain a comprehensive understanding of China’s political and business context and industry policy trends in one condensed briefing session so that the CEO could have more in-depth conversations with senior government officials and SOE leaders.

WHAT WE DID

Upon the request, DaoHe designed a half-day “China’s Political Context Briefing” based on the CEO’s background, industry issues, the company’s China strategy and stakeholder engagement plans. The tailored one-on-one briefing and consultation helped the CEO quickly learn China’s unique government structure, understand the evolving policy landscape and stakeholder expectations and the deeper rationale for the company’s challenges and opportunities in China. The CEO’s discussions with officials were productive and in-depth. He requested the custom-designed briefing being given to all future visiting global executives.

ISSUE

A leading ag company established a state-of-the-art R&D center in China. Due to policy changes, the center’s R&D programs were categorized as “restricted” for foreign investment. Major foreign players believed China would further close the door for foreign investment in the sector. The client requested DaoHe to evaluate the compliance risk of the center and help global executive team understand the confusing conflict between a backward policy trend in the sector versus China’s overall marching towards more open up and internationalization.

WHAT WE DID

DaoHe conducted an in-depth analysis of the role and position of the industry in China's overall economic development and drilled to the root cause of the recent policy changes. Based on the findings, DaoHe made a bold prediction against the then industry consensus that the government would ease the restriction on the sector in a foreseeable future.

The client adopted DaoHe’s judgement on the issue and decided to continue the operation of the R&D center as well as other strategic investment. The later policy development confirmed DaoHe’s judgement and prediction were correct and the relevant restrictions on foreign investment were lifted. The client’s R&D center and other strategic investment made based on DaoHe’s analysis helped the company gain first-mover advantages and opportunities in the competition.
